Lieutenant Colonel (LTC) Stanley B. Johnson IV is a native of Grand Forks, North Dakota, and a 2003 graduate of the University of North Dakota. LTC Johnson earned a commission as a Distinguished Military Graduate and Infantry Officer from the University of North Dakota’s Army ROTC program.
Upon completing the Infantry Officer Basic Course at Fort Benning, Georgia, LTC Johnson reported to Fort Campbell, KY. He served with the 101st Airborne Division as a Rifle Platoon Leader in the 3rd Battalion 502nd Infantry and as a Rifle Platoon Leader, Rifle Company Executive Officer, and Assistant Operations Officer in the 1st Battalion 506th Infantry. LTC Johnson deployed in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom with the 101st Airborne Division to Ramadi Iraq in 2005-06. In 2007, LTC Johnson was assigned to Fort Benning, Georgia, to attend the Maneuver Captains Career Course. Upon graduation, LTC Johnson was placed on the commandant’s list and assigned to the 4th Brigade, 25th Infantry Division at Fort Richardson, Alaska. On arrival LTC Johnson took command of Apache Company, 1st Battalion, 501st Parachute Infantry Regiment deploying to Paktika Province, Afghanistan in 2009-2010. Once complete with Company Command, LTC Johnson was selected to serve at the United States Military Academy at West Point in the Department of Military Instruction as an Instructor and later Assistant Professor. At West Point, LTC Johnson taught first, second, and third-year cadets and was also selected to serve as the Operations Officer for Cadet Field Training. Following this assignment, LTC Johnson attended the United States Navy’s College of Naval Command and Staff in Newport, Rhode Island, where he graduated with distinction. Next, LTC Johnson served in the 3rd Brigade, 1st Armor Division in Fort Bliss, Texas. LTC Johnson served as a Battalion Operations Officer and later Battalion Executive officer in the 4th Battalion, 6th Infantry. Subsequently, LTC Johnson was selected to serve as the Brigade Operations Officer for Fort Bliss’ 5th Armored Brigade. LTC Johnson was then selected to serve in the Army’s First Security Force Assistance Brigade at Fort Benning, Georgia. Serving as a Battalion Executive Officer in the 1st Battalion, 1st Security Forces Assistance Brigade, LTC Johnson deployed to Eastern Afghanistan in 2018. Following redeployment, LTC Johnson reported to Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson, Alaska, where he served as the Chief of Operations for U.S. Army Alaska and was later selected to be an ROTC PMS at the University of Wisconsin
LTC Johnson’s awards and decorations include the Bronze Star Medal, Meritorious Service Medal, Army Commendation Medal, Army Achievement Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Afghanistan Campaign Medal, Iraq Campaign Medal, Global War on Terrorism Expeditionary Medal, Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, Military Outstanding Volunteer Service Medal, Army Service Ribbon, Overseas Service Ribbon, and the NATO Medal. His unit awards include the Valorous Unit Award, Navy Unit Commendation, Meritorious Unit Commendation, and the Army Superior Unit Award. Additionally, LTC Johnson has earned the Combat Infantryman’s Badge, Expert Infantryman’s Badge, Parachutist Badge, Air Assault Badge, Pathfinder Badge, Basic Army Instructor Badge, German Armed Forces Proficiency Badge in Gold, and the Order of Saint Maurice.
LTC Johnson holds three academic degrees: a Bachelor of Arts degree in History from the University of North Dakota; a Master of Public Administration degree with an emphasis on Operations, Management, and Human Resources from John Jay College; and a Master of Arts degree in National Security Studies from the United States Naval War College. He has been married to his wife, Karin, since 2004, and they have two children, Stanley, age 9, and William, age 7. LTC Johnson enjoys ice hockey and golf.
