Lieutenant Colonel (LTC) Nathan J. Tarter commissioned as an Engineer Officer from Texas A&M University in 2008 and is a graduate of the Engineer Officer Basic and Advanced Courses, Airborne School, Sapper School, Urban Mobility Breachers Course, Counter Explosive Hazards Course, and the Command and General Staff College.

LTC Tarter’s previous assignments include:

  • 1st Infantry Division at Fort Riley Kansas where he served as the Brigade Engineer and Chief of Plans for the 2nd Brigade, 1st Infantry Division (DAGGER), Battalion Operations Officer and Executive Officer for the 82nd Engineer Battalion (BLUEBABE) and the Deputy Operations Officer for the 1st Infantry Division (DANGER).
  • US Army Corps of Engineers Alaska District where he served as the Resident Engineer and Northern Area OIC at Eielson AFB, AK.
  • 1st Cavalry Division at Fort Hood TX where he served as the Battalion Engineer and Headquarters Company Commander for 2nd Battalion 5th Cavalry Regiment, 1st Brigade, 1st Cavalry Division (IRONHORSE)
  • 1st Armored Division at Fort Bliss TX where he served as a Platoon Leader, Executive Officer, and Assistant Operations Officer for the Special Troops Battalion, 3rd Brigade, 1st Armored Division (BULLDOGS).

LTC Tarter has combat and operational deployments to the Afghanistan, Korea, and European Theaters.

LTC Tarter holds a Bachelors of Science in Construction Science from Texas A&M University, a Masters of Science in Geological Engineering from The Missouri University of Science and Technology, a Masters of Science in Civil Engineering from the University of Texas at Austin, a Masters of Science in Operational Studies from the Army University, and a PMP certificate from the Project Management Institute.

LTC Tarter arrived at The University of Wisconsin-Madison to serve as the Professor of Military Science in June of 2025.
