Captain Simon H. Claycomb enlisted and attended Basic Combat Training and Advanced Individual Training (11B) at Ft. Benning, Georgia in 2003. He was assigned to B/2-127 as a rifleman, part of the 32nd IBCT in the Wisconsin Army National Guard. Following this assignment, he transferred to the New Mexico Army National Guard, completed the Early Commissioning Program (ECP) at New Mexico Military Institute, and commissioned as a 2nd Lieutenant into the Colorado Army National Guard (COARNG). He served as the Detachment Commander for the Recruit Sustainment Program in Pueblo, CO, and worked full time as a military technician and on state active duty orders as a Travel Pay Technician at the United States Property & Fiscal Office (USPFO) at Buckley Air Force Base in Aurora, CO. While serving in the COARNG, CPT Claycomb received his Bachelor of Science Degree in Business Administration at the University of Colorado-Colorado Springs, and transitioned to Active Duty as a Military Intelligence officer, branch detailed Infantry.

After completing BOLC II and IBOLC in 2008 at Ft. Benning, GA, CPT Claycomb was assigned to B/1-72 AR, 1/2ID at Camp Casey in the Republic of Korea from 2009-2010. Following this assignment, he was assigned to A/1-68 AR, 3/4ID, served as the Company XO, and deployed to Iraq from 2010-2011 near COB Adder in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom and Operation New Dawn. Shortly after returning from this deployment, CPT Claycomb attended the Military Intelligence Captain’s Career Course at Ft. Huachuca, AZ from 2011-2012. In 2012, CPT Claycomb relocated to Ft. Hood, TX and was assigned to HHT/1-9 CAV, 4/1CD where he deployed to Afghanistan in support of Operation Enduring Freedom in RC-E. He served as a Security Force Advise and Assist Team Leader and primary intelligence advisor to the Afghan National Security Force’s Provincial Operations Coordination Center (OCC-P) in Kapisa Province. Following this deployment, he returned to Ft. Hood and transferred to the 1st Air Cavalry Brigade, where he served as the BDE AS-2 from 2013-2014.

In March 2014, CPT Claycomb was selected to command the 1st Cavalry Division Headquarters Forward Detachment and deployed personnel from across the Division’s Headquarters and Headquarters Battalion (HHBn) to Kandahar Airfield in RC-S from 2014-2015 in support of Operation Enduring Freedom and Operation Freedom’s Sentinel. During this deployment, CPT Claycomb served as the commander for the detachment and HHBn staff, while transitioning the HQ from Regional Command-South (RC-S) to Train, Advise, Assist Command-South (TAAC-S).

CPT Claycomb’s awards and decorations include the Bronze Star Medal (1OLC), the Army Commendation Medal, the Army Achievement Medal (1OLC), the Army Reserve Component Achievement Medal, the National Defense Service Medal, the Afghanistan Campaign Medal (2 BSS), the Iraq Campaign Medal (2 BSS), the Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, the Korea Defense Service Medal, the Army Service Ribbon, the Overseas Service Ribbon (4th Award), the NATO Medal (1 BSS), the Parachutist Badge, and the Expert Infantryman’s Badge.
